It was the coat colour of the Bavarian infantry in the early 19th Century, and this Centaurea cyanus, commonly known as Cornflower or Bachelor’s Button – is also an annual flowering plant native to Europe. But there’s nothing granny about this gorgeous blue — it’s a modern take on a classic hue, for those who love anything in this cool cornflower family.

A go-anywhere coat, with the versatility to be worn to the office or with joggers and sneakers on weekends.
Our bold heritage coat is made with 100 percent heirloom wool and has a gender-inclusive fit that keeps you warm even on dull, sub-zero days. The structured wool holds us up when the weather gets rough, and the hood stands tall with pride. Generous pockets hold all essentials; the hand-turned wooden toggles signal artistry; and last, but not least, the saturated colours get us all excited for the winter. Hidden beneath, there is a stylish (detachable) quilted liner, which makes this a 3-season investment piece.
Is it warm? Yes, made for Canadian winters, 4 layers of insulation.
Supremely warm wool from a heritage British woolen mill, c.1800’s. Thick wool shells were worn by sailors and are wind and water resistant as well as temperature rated to -20℃. Equally eventful on the interior is the removable wool-filled liner, which can absorb 30% of moisture without feeling wet. The remarkable thing about wool is that it insulates and regulates temperature, so you’ll be warm outside and won’t overheat on the subway.
How can I adjust the sleeve length?
The cuffs are designed with 3” of extra length to accommodate a roll, if desired. Adjust your cuff length depending on your arm length and glove height.
What is the style? A modern relaxed/over-sized fitting duffle coat with a wide range of versatility.
A fresh Canadian take on the traditional duffle coat. We honoured the history of the duffle coat with traditional elements; thick wool, wooden toggles and a strong hood. The coat is modernized with raw French seams, pure materials, asymmetrical hemlines, interchangeable fasteners, gender inclusive fit, rolled sleeves, a removable liner, and most importantly, bold colourways.
Why is the coat gender inclusive?
Most clothing has gender built into its design. Men’s clothing will feature closures on the left while women’s will close on the opposite side. Our dream is to design for everyone, without social constructs built into the architecture of the garment. When you wear a SteMargScot coat, you decide how to represent yourself. Since this is a heritage coat, we love the idea that this coat can be passed along to anyone in your friends and family circle.
Can the liner be worn on its own?
Absolutely! Our customers describe the liner as luxurious and one of their favourite things about the coat, it’s a 3-in-1. We’ve even been asked to sell the liner as a stand-alone item. The indigo liner is very versatile. It can be worn on its own, under other coats, and makes for a spectacularly cozy house coat.

Wool Overcoat:
100% heirloom wool: custom-woven by a family-owned mill circa 1800’s, UK. This wool was small-batch woven for this coat and is naturally wind, water, odour, and microbial resistant. Dyes are low-impact OEKO-TEX certified.
Maple toggles:
bespoke and hand-turned in Toronto by a female wood-turner using remanent hard maple. These one-of-kind toggles have been seasoned with hemp oil harvested from a local farm. The toggles are individually hand-branded using a tool made by an onshore company operating since c.1950’s.
100% Wool rope:
made in the famous Muskoka region with local sheep’s wool, minimal processing, and twisted in a female-owned wool mill. Look closely and you may see evidence of nature in its fibers.
Corozo nut buttons:
sustainably made from the seed of the fallen tagua fruit in South America. OEKO-TEX certified.
Lucky for us, wool requires less cleaning compared to synthetics. Spot clean with water for discrete spots. Eco-dry clean if necessary. Do not machine wash or dry.
Removable Quilted Inner Liner- 100% Tencel™:
produced from sustainably sourced wood by environmentally responsible processes. The fibers are breathable, moisture wicking, temperature regulating, and biodegradable. Sourced from a Canadian supplier.
HDWool™ Active insulation:
this is not the typical fossil-fuel derived polyester-fill . This is 75% traceable British wool insulation that is warm, breathable, and naturally temperature regulating. The wool is sourced from farmers with WOOLKEEPERS® certification to ensure animal welfare is prioritized, and sheep are non-mulesed. This wool has excellent moisture management and can absorb 30% of its own weight without feeling wet. The farms are LAND TO MARKET ™ verified for agricultural land-regeneration ensuring that carbon is continually sequestered. The remaining 25% content is PLA, a biopolymer made from fermented plant starch.
The detachable liner is conveniently machine washable in cold water. Tumble dry delicate with no heat or hang to dry for longevity.
